Glorifying God...Expanding His Kingdom

November 2018 Newsletter

A Word from the Pastor…

As most of you know I have decided to retire effective December 30, 2018.  Lana and I have come to this decision after much prayer and seeking the Lord’s guidance for our lives.  We are excited about my retirement and whatever the Lord has next for us in His work.

Lana and I plan to continue to live in this area, but we will not be a part of this church because we would not want to interfere in any way with the selection of or the work of your next pastor.  This is hard for us, but it is what we feel we must do.

Let me encourage you to do several things.  First, be regular in your attendance at church during this transition time.  It would be easy to become lax, but your attendance, service and leadership are needed now more than ever!

Second, keep your eyes on Jesus!  He is still the Head of this church.  Trust the Lord and have faith in Him to bless this church during this time and in the future.  Some churches and people have even grown spiritually because of their need to trust in the Lord in a transition time like this.  (Isaiah 6:1-8)

Third, pray daily for the Lord’s guidance and blessings.  The Lord works in response to our prayers.  Pray for the search committee that will be selected.  Pray hard for the Lord to lead the team and the church to the right man to be your next pastor.  I believe He will.  Also, pray for this church and its leaders at this transition time.  Pray for unity and love among the church fellowship.

Let me say again that I believe the Lord is going to bless this church in the future because Whitelaw Avenue Baptist Church is His church and He promised to bless and guide His church and give it victory over the gates of Hell.  (Matthew 16:18)

In His Love,

~Bro. Richard

Church Information Meeting…

Sunday, November 4 at 6:30 pm we will have an important church meeting with our GBA Director of Missions, Dr. Tracy Jaggers.  He will be coming to share important information with our church about this transition time and the entire process of seeking for a new pastor.  This is for the entire church and anyone is welcome to attend.

Operation Christmas Child…

Sunday, November 4 is our collection day for the shoeboxes.  If you forget to bring yours to church, you can bring it to the church the week of November 5-11 because we will not take them to the area collection center until November 12.

The seniors will meet Thursday, November 15 at 1:00 pm at Polly’s (Twin Rivers) Restaurant in Cottage Hills.

Trunk or Treat Report…

We want to thank everyone who was involved in our Trunk or Treat last Wednesday night.  We had about 500 children who came.  All the children who came received candy, snacks, a children’s gospel leaflet and a children’s church activities sheet.  We also had an information table for adults with Bibles, adult Gospel leaflets and information about local ministries and our church.

Hope Center Toy Drive…

We will be collecting toys for the Hope Center’s 2018 Christmas Toy Giveaway.  Put your toy in the collection barrel in the foyer by Sunday, December 9.  They say their most urgent need is for larger toys for boys and girls ages 1-12.  They like to give every child 1 large gift rather than several small stocking stuffers.

New Wednesday Night Study…

On Wednesday, November 14 at 7:00 pm, we will begin an 8 week study for adult men and women entitled “Victory in Spiritual Warfare” by Dr. Tony Evans.  We will watch a 30 minute video and then have a group discussion time of what was taught.

Hope Center Thanksgiving Day Meal…

Our church donated $100 to the Hope Center for the purchase of turkeys or other food for the Hope Center’s Thanksgiving Day Meal on Thanksgiving Day.  If you are interested in volunteering to help deliver the prepared meals on Thanksgiving morning, call the Hope Center at 259-0959.

Parents Night Out…

The youth will be hosting a Parent’s Night Out on Saturday, November 17th from 5:00 – 9:30 pm.  This will be fund raiser night for our youth group.  Parents can drop off their children and have a date night, while the youth watch them and do some activities with them.  Please RSVP to Donna Gaines at 618-593-5259 if you are interested.

Our Volunteers say that serving has made a difference in their lives and their relationship with God.  Each month we are going to Spotlight a few of our volunteers.  Every volunteer has a story.  We love to hear how God is working in the lives of our volunteers.

"I serve because God calls us to serve and I love the feeling that I get when I am serving.  When I serve with the right heart, the joy that I receive is immeasurable.

It makes me happy." - CINDI MARTIN

"I serve because I want to love and help others as Jesus would and to be the light to someone who has not found him yet." - JENNY POINTER

"I serve because when our mother passed away in 1936, there were many neighbors who watched us while Dad was working, which was a good example for me." - EVA FAYE ZEISSET

"I serve to obey God as He wants us to.  I grow closer to God as I serve Him, and He blesses me in all ways!" - MARY COLLIER

"I serve to hopefully make a small difference in someone's life." - JOYCE MILLIGAN

"I serve because I love the Lord and I want to serve Him and encourage other Christians." - JIM FARRIS

Dear WABC Family,

Thank you for your prayers, phone calls and thought!  Thank you to Pastor Richard for visits and phone calls.  Thank you to Joyce Milligan, Mary Miller, Cash and Mari Sue, and Ginger Toolan for providing delicious meals.  I am now 4 weeks post-surgery, doing well and I have 8 weeks left to full recovery.  God Bless everyone for their kindness.

Whitelaw Avenue Baptist Friends,

Thank you for the pretty birthday card and Bible verse (Ephesians 1:3).  Nice to be remembered on my birthday.  Also, I appreciate receiving the monthly Messenger of Whitelaw Ave Baptist Church, as I enjoy reading what is happening in my home church.

God Bless all of you,

Rosella Watts

Church Family,

For all you do, THANK YOU.

I just wanted to thank each and every one for the prayers, wishes, and especially the ladies who helped in the kitchen with the recent passing of my Dad.  Your kindness did not go unnoticed and we certainly appreciate it.

Thanks again,

Michael & Tonya Flatt
